I do lots that I may share on this blog.Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17457670177660591825noreply@blogger.comBlogger13125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14994467.post-26667499527136724272008-07-04T01:34:00.000-07:002008-07-04T01:58:46.783-07:00Holy crap, it's an update!!

So wow, I suck at keeping a blog. Who knew?

What's happened: Munchie got sick, but is better now. I took a cake decorating class and while it was fun, it was a lot of hard work. Drew said he doesn't care what the cake looks like, he's still going to eat it. My year-long search for a job finally ended in May and while the company is public knowledge, just me having a public blog can stir up concern so I am not going to risk having the dogs called on me by naming it. Barb (Acornbud's Yarns) came in and saw me this past week, which was really cool. In fact, I wanted to go to Mocha Java this evening, but didn't have a change of clothes.

After Barb's visit, I got inspired to pick up the needles and make me some socks. I have a good amount of sock yarn, plus I never finished the mate to one of them, so I will do that this weekend. In fact, I have a crazy Sunday to where I'll probably be downtown all day as it won't make much sense to go home. Maybe some fellow knitters would like to meet up at Ala Moana or Ward. Heck, I'll even go as far as Kahala! Okay, so I'll post in the Yahoo group, I'm sure I'll get some more hits there.

BTW, how sad is it that I can't remember how to make the link work by clicking on that person's name? I truly sucketh.Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17457670177660591825noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14994467.post-66636936577164524942007-11-03T03:19:00.000-07:002007-11-03T03:40:20.558-07:00Holy moly, I haven't touched this thing since July?!? Well, let me tell you what's been up:

Drew returned from deployment and we went to Hilo to celebrate my 30th birthday:

A friend from The Hawaii All-Breed Rabbit Club got me into orchids. Drew bought me this beautiful one while we were in Hilo:

I haven't knitted anything in quite some time. I got frustrated when I couldn't get my second sock to stripe up correctly, plus Sir Poops-a-lot (Munchie) bit into it and instead of ingesting the working yarn, he sucked down the yarn that was already knit. I took it as a sign and put the project away until I could stop being mad at it. I did find a styrofoam mannequin head like I'd been looking for to model hats at Party City during Halloween, so I bought it. Drew is gone for a drill, so maybe I'll modge podge the mannequin head tomorrow or something.

Seeing as how I have been unsuccessful in finding a real job, I began private tutoring. I have 5 kids, two of which are in the same family, which helps. The ombudsman from my ship emailed me information about getting certified to teach in Hawaii, so I am going to go to the session. I figure it can't hurt to look into it.

We are going to Texas in a couple of short weeks for Thanksgiving. It was much cheaper to buy tickets for that timeframe as opposed to xmastime. While there I hope to do the things I did not get to do last year. I miss the hillcountry and just want to drive through it.

Did I mention Munchie has discovered walking upright is pretty cool? Once he perfects it, there's a whole world of things for him to destroy.

Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17457670177660591825noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14994467.post-13449645679754865332007-07-17T02:23:00.000-07:002008-12-11T12:43:16.681-08:00Behind every knitter is a small (sometimes bigger) animal
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPkP9hi2PZZyovq7eaDgdc21ueQyVX0UKmoWnI3HwInGHDYle7xQnhWc1imPrSQV-lgSHe-LrNru_mFnHYcP-4vCZZutge4T43ZN83BeubtE6Y3Qm0AmAqEW2zQdvRfhol9R9t/s200/P7020006.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5088094893981398930" />
Waiting, watching for his chance...
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgr2qrXwrzKnu8sNEokfiFWEKJoWaTHByiNUR8m3VQAyMlj-igB_fcdu5YkMJXnfl_832X-0b2HtOFiZtV8IOzQd8xm0Fp4nQ8lg_BYF-GNh88m2yz8JrQaxan364ZKngd7Qyol/s200/P7150051.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5088095563996297122" />
AT UTTER DESTRUCTION!!!!!
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4jTWEsRILWyzOiFuV5ZQSZvgD1V5uysO8j8BbRESlnlvqVZYUm8kOwA7RApi_hVfM_Rf73Pv8srFffXQEOB5bnuXPhLqGy93uLdnIgMdrhCmFxKmANCeGAmaZKRA-UfcYINRV/s200/P7010003.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5088095568291264434" />
Apparantly it was totally worth it to land himself in a timeout.Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17457670177660591825noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14994467.post-55507512200088608792007-06-04T01:56:00.000-07:002008-12-11T12:43:17.860-08:00<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4bMJqrIwZgRYLGNJKQXH8vaidNWQu8ChwdtQC-zos0c2zacj2CQjy7RJsGjvYP-8amH26pqFr0h92c2X_M-v4_WqzawIAb9JgKBEpTKaI3axUX59DC_GGTy_0xiGXj_dOpKlp/s200/P5280101.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5072130826804895122" />

I swear this rabbit lives better than me at this point. When I had my guests, I hadn't had a chance to go shopping, but there was fresh lettuce, apples, and blueberries in the fridge for the rabbit. Today I had to seriously restrain myself because he peed on the couch while he was sitting next to me as I was playing Sims2. After I put him in the cage and cleaned up the mess, Drew called me and I told him what happened. He responded by saying "Well, was he happy?" I said "I don't know, but I wasn't happy." Drew reminded me that bunnies pee on people as a sign of affection. While that could be a possibility, I have serious doubts. Oddly the rabbit keeps me calm because I don't want to scare him by ever losing it in front of him. He works better than deep breaths and counting to ten.Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17457670177660591825noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14994467.post-2036109102257019132007-05-13T22:05:00.000-07:002008-12-11T12:43:18.063-08:00<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_7iOZZaNTw4o46RUrRaGMIFMVsm7ooNQV_RQg1GZhwFdD9_-u4Ujo_hjGEU1As-3OeMlFJtJ2HUO0OU3Vmkrq9YZ5PI6IvKeNwwP1yFDV-50UJFg85d5BB5-izuBmFKVTYdjX/s200/Clover.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5065860427955805570" />
So much has happened in just the past week: My little Clover died last Saturday. I spent the entire day at the ER vet on pins and needles and while she came home alright, she died within an hour. I felt so horrible and cried all night, but finally had to come to terms that I did the best I could have done and while my intentions were good, I should've gotten more guidance for proper care. I wanted to cremate her, but I could not bear the thought of her little body going into the incinerator, so I got up early on Sunday morning, mowed the lawn, dug a hole, and buried her with her toys. I look out at the mound everyday and it's getting somewhat easier, but it still hurts.

On a happier note, I graduated from UH Manoa today. Three of my friends are here from Texas and New York to celebrate with me and we've been having a good time. I've taken on the role of tourist with them and have been enjoying Oahu through that perspective. I'll post pictures soon as they are on my desktop and it's being used right now.

Well, I plan to be back at Aloha Knitters this Thursday, so hopefully some knitting will have taken place before then.Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17457670177660591825noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14994467.post-43581331792863185972007-04-25T16:10:00.000-07:002008-12-11T12:43:18.370-08:00<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRQSs7vr6-YvQxzAX7t2UuxkE5sShD5OETHX3dU3fRbXw4slwKqHqNFz608JwSoPdWVm4_NGMlVgCAvvMIh8p0whOjihkIkoDjML6ohvWosBp6ci4_cveUWUlGqCUNhkUcjXjq/s200/P4240092.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5057553690776612338" />
This is the sock that never ends...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUVDL2ZiDqmvAtjrytPekezs06gcRAmqwyOzZLp8nh9V4My9WhPhWzRq2AQKGbTBgJ3yTJ15LTEuL80ZHW-yMozUn0u9U6hDAfhc5jnrImT1woRxy-Zms18eIi3a-9XtnHR9AQ/s200/P4200088.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5057552054394072546" />

Okay, so I've been working on this sock for quite awhile now because I have so much other craziness going on. I'm in the last few days of school and am trying to ensure that I will graduate as planned. I also have the bunny, which when Opal was over the other night observed how much of my time the little guy takes up. To add to the insanity, I purchased ANOTHER bunny yesterday as he is VERY tiny and I sincerely was worried about his fate in the pet store. All the guinea pigs were climbing on him as well as the other rabbit and he's too little to defend himself. Munchie is overjoyed at having a new friend, although I think he's kinda freaking out the little one. So yeah, finishing this one sock may take longer than it normally should. Knitting will happen tomorrow night at Aloha Knitters, I swear!Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17457670177660591825noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14994467.post-1176358054966054012007-04-11T23:01:00.000-07:002007-04-11T23:07:34.976-07:00Finally, a pet!

This is Munchie. Munchie is a Netherland Dwarf bunny. He is completely awesome. We got him on March 31 and we love him. Every day I have to go to school breaks my heart because he's all alone until someone gets home. He has the run of the downstairs and has discovered the computer room. He loves to run and play and be michievous. Munchie also has an affection for my husband's shoes, socks, pants, and t-shirts. He may very well be a very spoiled bunny!Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17457670177660591825noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14994467.post-1175340466615849602007-03-31T05:14:00.000-07:002007-03-31T05:27:46.626-07:00I know, I know. It's been forever since I've touched this blog. What can I say, life has gotten in the way. Between TMJD and resurrecting dead laptops, I'm trying to graduate and nail down a job for after graduation. Let me tell you, it's been frustrating. All these people act like they want you so bad because you're graduating from college, then when they realize most of you work experience has been of a human nature kind, suddenly you're not so bright and flashy enough to sell their retail products. No, I don't want to really work in retail because I won't be changing the world in any way whatsoever, but sheesh, I got student loans to pay off and sadly, those are the jobs that will enable me to make significant payments. Frustrating.

I've also been debating getting a pet. Seeing as I have allergies to cats and most dogs, I need to find something that won't kill me. I was really stoked on a turtle for a while, but got pretty depressed when I realized that he would outlive me and possibly 2 generations if I procreate. Fish have such a short lifespan and that's just too much heartbreak for me to handle so frequently. I've finally narrowed my choice down to a rabbit, but of course, I'm still deciding what kind of rabbit. Male, female, baby, adult, lop, rex, who knows? I'd like a litter trained adult because I wouldn't have to worry too much about letting s/he hop around loosely the house. Housing says that rabbits are allowed but only in cages, but c'mon, they don't require indoor cats and dogs to be caged.

Well, sorry to disappoint but I do not have any pictures to post yet. I am working on my first pair of socks thanks to my sock obsessed knitting buddy Opal. I am knitting Jaywalkers, a pattern I'm sure many are familiar with.

Well, it is late and I must try and go to bed. I guess a job where I can work into the wee hours wouldn't be out of the question.Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17457670177660591825noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14994467.post-1163229390379377512006-11-10T23:11:00.000-08:002006-11-10T23:17:28.166-08:00

I'm done! I'm FINALLY done with Shedir! I had to frog this hat 3 1/2 times, but I refused to give up. It definitely was the most intense thing I've knit in my short little knitting career, but I'm glad I did it. I am waiting on a few more hats and plan to be dropping them all off probably next week. I think I'm going to pick up my mother's scarf again, which was originally going to go to a friend, but my mother really deserves it. So yes ladies, you'll see me with the straight needles again for a little while at SnB night.Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17457670177660591825noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14994467.post-1160898816700210332006-10-15T00:29:00.000-07:002006-10-15T00:53:36.716-07:00
My Haul

Today was my birthday and this is my haul: Debbie Bliss Casmerino to finish a scarf, green and white Mercerised Cotton to make Drew a Green Lantern cap, and PLYMOUTH YARN INTERCHANGABLE NEEDLES!!! The needles are from size 5 to 10 with 4 cord lengths: 18", 24", 32", and 40". They are bamboo and the base screws into the cord. I am so very excited to have this set. I rationalized it to Drew by pointing out how much I'd have to spend on each circular needle to have all the various sizes and lengths and he agreed with me. I also got the new Killers CD and some stuff for school, mainly some charts to help me out with French.
My Rowan Calmer came in this week from merry ol' England, so I began my Shedir cap. It is such an involved hat, oh my gosh! But it will all be worth it. I will post pics of it as it progresses because it doesn't look like much right now. I was able to recruit (or bamboozle, depends on how you look at it) 8 people total including myself. Some of the women have said they will make 2 hats, which I think is very generous.
Well, I should get back to work on my hat, so happy knitting to all!Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17457670177660591825noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14994467.post-1160218104231890682006-10-07T03:33:00.000-07:002006-10-07T03:48:24.250-07:00

I LOVE the way alpaca feels. I wanted to find out more about the animal from which the fibre comes from and this is what I learned:
1. It is an ungulate, meaning that the mammal uses the tips of its toes to maintain its entire body weight.
2. Alpacas are not used as burden bearers like llamas, but are raised primarily for their fibre.
3. They (ahem) poo in neat little dung piles kept far from their grazing area.
4. They can be domesticated and are kept indoors like one would a dog or cat.
5. If they feel threatened, they will kick and spit.
6. They don't like their heads to be touched.
7. Female alpacas do not ovulate on a regular basis, rather, ovulation is induced after mating and with the presence of sperm.
8. Females are pregnant for 11-11.5 months.
9. As with most things, Alpacas have been succesfully cross-bred with llamas.
10. Their life span is a little over 20 years.

For more info on Alpacas, go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AlpacaJenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17457670177660591825noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14994467.post-1160100502228611312006-10-05T18:43:00.000-07:002006-10-05T19:12:24.063-07:00Chemo Caps

(image borrowed from http://www.girlfromauntie.com/journal/index.php?p=24 because I haven't knit my Shedir cap yet.)

So I'm trying to rally up some people to knit and/or crochet chemo caps in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month. We will then be donating them to the Straub Oncology Clinic here in Honolulu, HI. There are no restrictions on yarn color or pattern for the caps because 1. everyone is at different levels in their knitting/crocheting skills and 2. Cancer does not discriminate, so caps for women, children, and men are welcome. Please keep the hats appropiate, by that I mean do not submit the "Fuck Cancer" hat that Sharon Osborne wore during her chemotherapy. While I'm sure someone would like it, I don't want to take the chance on offending anyone. There are "restrictions" on the yarn: please use soft materials such as cotton, chenille, microfibre, cashmere, etc. 100% wool is not recommended because it can irritate the skin, as well as allergies. I've heard mixed feelings on wool blends, so cashmerino like Debbie Bliss' would be appropiate. Name and address must be submitted with every hat because the clinic wants to send out thank you cards and has to keep track of donations. Also, include material content and washing instructions with your hat(s) when you turn them in; I don't think we should launder them beforehand because certain soaps can irritate the already sensitive patient's skin. For further information, you can respond to this post or email me with "Chemo Cap" in the message title.
Here are some links to hat patterns:

http://www.knitty.com/issuefall04/knittyF04surp.pdf#search=%22chemo%20cap%2Bknitty%22
http://www.headhuggers.org/patterns/patterns.htm
http://www.knitty.com/archive.html
http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/directory/hats.phpJenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17457670177660591825noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14994467.post-1159760855000517512006-10-01T20:43:00.000-07:002006-10-01T20:47:35.000-07:00

So I made this hat and had a lot of fun doing so. I got approached at the cafe that I knit at by a gentleman who works in the print gallery next to it who asked me to make one for his grandson that is due this week. It was the first time I've ever made anything for profit and it felt good.Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17457670177660591825noreply@blogger.com2
